Prof. Muhajir Efendi, Mendikbud kemarin menulis artikel berjudul Pendidikan Karakter di Sekolah di sebuah harian nasional terkemuka. Artikel tersebut menggambarkan secara garis besar mengenai program Penguatan Pendidikan Karakter yg menjadi kebijakan Mendikbud. Kunci-kunci kebijakan itu adalah kurikulum berbasis luas ( broad-based curriculum) yang mensyaratkan sebuah ekosistem pendidikan dengan melibatkan keluarga, sekolah dan masyarakat. Kemudian juga guru harus berubah karena bukan lagi sebagai satu-satunya sumber belajar.

Saya sependapat dengan pikiran besar Mendikbud. Tapi saya ragu dengan keberhasilan program tersebut selama persekolahan sebagai lembaga tidak direformasi dengan cara justru mengurangi perannya dalam pendidikan. Tanpa tindakan konkrit ini, konsep kurikulum berbasis luas hanya bagus diwacana tapi buruk dalam praktek. Guru juga sulit berubah jika sekolah masih dibiarkan mendominasi hidup warga muda. Banyak sekolah saat ini dirancang untuk kepentingan guru, bukan kepentingan warga belajar sehingga hanya menjadi tempat guru mengajar, tapi bukan tempat murid belajar melalui self reflection atas pengalamannya di luar sekolah.

It takes a village to raise a child. Kita membutuhkan keluarga, masyarakat, dan perguruan, begitu nasehat Ki Hadjar Dewantoro, untuk mendidik warga muda. Menjadikan persekolahan sebagai tumpuan utama dalam pendidikan, apalagi pendidikan karakter, sudah terbukti gagal. Sekolah saat ini adalah sekolah paksa massal yang tidak pernah dirancang oleh para teknokrat sebagai lingkungan pembentukan karakter. Sekolah adalah instrumen teknokratik untuk menyiapkan tenaga kerja murah bagi kepentingan industri besar-besaran. No more no less. Karakter jujur, amanah, cerdas dan peduli hanya bisa tumbuh subur dalam jiwa yang merdeka. Persekolahan sejak lama, terutama sejak Orde Baru, tidak pernah dimaksudkan untuk membentuk jiwa merdeka.

Karakter hanya bisa dibentuk melalui pengalaman karakter di luar sekolah yaitu dalam keluarga dan masyarakat. Guru di sekolah bisa membantu warga belajar merefleksikan pengalaman karakter ini melalui membaca, menulis dan berdiskusi di sekolah. Tapi kebanyakan sekolah telah menghabiskan waktu warga belajar sehingga kebanyakan warga belajar tidak memiliki pengalaman karakter yang memadai untuk direfleksikan di sekolah. Sekolah dalam rancangan dan prakteknya saat ini adalah hambatan terbesar pendidikan karakter. Kurikulum berbasis luas hanya bisa dilaksanakan jika jam sekolah dikurangi hingga 20 persen (2 jam perhari, 3 hari perminggu), anggaran pendidkkan direalokasikan bagi penguatan keluarga dan masyarakat (pramuka, karang taruna, sanggar-sanggar seni, klub-klub olah raga, remaja masjid/gereja, magang dsb).

Sekolah yang mendominasi waktu dan anggaran akan mempersempit kesempatan belajar di luar sekolah. Kurikulum berbasis luas akan hanya menjadi wacana belaka. Dalam skema kurikulum berbasis luas itu, dibutuhkan banyak community organizers yang membentuk Self Organized Learning Environment (SOLE). Guru bisa berperan banyak dalam SOLE ini. Tanpa realokasi waktu dan anggaran pendidikan itu, konsep yang bagus itu akan gagal lagi. Kita akan menyaksikan persekolahan yang makin banyak, tapi pendidikan justru semakin langka.
