Paidi terbangun ketika adzan isya berkumandang. Hati Paidi dipenuhi kebahagiaan, damai hatinya dirasakan menjalar keseluruh tubuhnya. Tubuhnya menjadi segar dan ringan. Masih terasa kesejukan Pemberi lampu walaupun itu hanya sebuah mimpi.

Keesokan paginya Paidi dipanggil kyai. Setelah mandi dan berpakaian rapi ia sowan ke ndalem. Dilihatnya kyai sudah menunggunya di depan ndalem. Di depannya ada meja bulat dari kayu jati, di atasnya ada dua cangkir kopi dan ada dua bungkus rokok kretek dengan merk yang berbeda.

Kyai mempersilahkan Paidi duduk, “Diminum kopinya,”…. ucap Abah Yai lalu mengambil sebatang rokok dari merk kesukaannya dan menyalakannya.

Asap rokok dan aroma kopi melengkapi suasana mereka, “Yang itu rokokmu…dinyalakan aja”…perintah kyai. Paidi mengambil sebatang dan menyalakannya.

Sebenarnya Paidi tidak biasa merokok karena sejak kecil hingga nyantri di Pondok ini dia tidak pernah merokok, walaupun di pondok ini tidak ada aturan dilarang merokok.

Karena dia jarang-jarang pegang uang untuk beli sebatang rokok dan santri-santri lainnya belum ada yang memberi dan mengajaknya merokok. Walaupun begitu cara menghisap dan mengepulkan asap rokoknya kelihatan seakan dia adalah perokok berat.

Terjadi keheningan di antara mereka, kyai hanya diam, sesekali beliau mengucapkan kalimat tasbih, Paidi juga diam menunduk.

Lalu kyai berkata memecah keheningan “Aku selama ini sengaja bersikap keras kepadamu, supaya kamu tidak bergantung kapadaku, aku pingin kamu lebih bergantung kepada Allah secara langsung,” Kiyai menghisap rokoknya dalam-dalam.

Lalu berkata, “Kelak kedudukanmu itu akan lebih tinggi daripada kedudukanku. Aku tidak mengijinkanmu ikut belajar itu karena kamu lebih cocok mempelajari ilmu hikmah, tapi bukan aku yang mengajarkan, namun guru Agung yang mengajarkan hal itu sendiri padamu.”

Paidi mengangguk, walau kiyainya ini terang-terangan mengatakan kalo kedudukannya kelak akan lebih tinggi, di hadapan kyainya ini Paidi semakin hormat, hatinya diliputi ketawadu’an yang begitu kuat pada kyai ini.

“Mimpimu tadi malam jadikan kekuatan dalam hatimu,”…ucap kyai singkat.

Paidi agak terkejut mendengar ucapan kyainya, ternyata kyai mengetahui mimpinya tadi malam, dan entah apa yang dipikirkan.

Paidi jadi tertunduk diam dan menangis agak sesenggukan, “Dan ciri orang ahli hikmah…,”… kyai berhenti.

Setelah menyeruput kopi, kyai melanjutkan kata-katanya lagi, “…Hatinya tak pernah lupa pada Allah, hatinya dipenuhi dengan Allah, lantunan dzikir yang berputar-putar didalamnya… dan aku melihat … tanda tanda itu ada padamu.”

“Hatimu selalu bergetar tanpa ada yang mengajari… banyak santri dan bahkan Kyai yang masih ingin belajar seperti itu,”… kata kyai lalu berdiri mendekati Paidi, menaruh tangannya dipundak Paidi.

“Tugasmu sungguh mulia… pada saatnya nanti kamu harus menjalani tugas itu,”…kata kyai.

Bergemuruhlah hati Paidi, hatinya berdzikir dengan sendirinya..” Allah…Allah…Allah….” secara terus menerus.

“Wis …sekarang waktunya kamu bersih-bersih ndalem dan pondok seperti biasa… utamanya toilet depan untuk tamu-tamu saya kamu bersihkan karena nanti akan ada tamu”… perintah kyai lalu masuk ke ndalem.

Paidi berdiri dan beranjak menuju ke kamarnya mengambil sapu lidi lalu mulai menyapu halaman pondok, menata sandal para santri yang berserakan di depan kamar.

Semenjak mimpi Petromaks hati Paidi selalu berbunga-bunga, perasaannya selalu gembira dan apa yang dilihatnya selalu nampak ceria.

Dan pagi itu ketika dia mengambil sapu ada seekor kucing yang terusik dari tidurnya dan menyingkir sambil berkata…”Dholim.. enak enak tidur diusir…”

Tanpa sadar Paidi memandangi kucing itu dan berkata… “Siapa yang ngusir kamu… balik tidur sini, saya hanya mengambil sapu ini…”

Heran, kucing menoleh dan memandanginya. Paidi tersenyum, dan kucing itu ngeloyor kembali ke tempat tadi dan tidur kembali.
